Who knew there was such a thing? Well, we didn’t but apparently there is, and its on 13th July. As a result of this we’ve been contacted by SingleHop to write about what makes us Geeks, by answering a few questions from them. At first we were a bit like, “huh?” But then we thought, “meh, may as well.” So here we are telling you why we are geeks, and why that is awesome!
1. What makes you a geek?
I guess what makes me a geek has to be my love for video games. Having said that I can be a geek in loads of different areas too. It’s a bit sad to say, but I do kind of love a good spreadsheet, especially if I’ve created it. I can also geek out over music quite a lot, I have a weird thing where by when I’m working I like to listen to epic soundtracks from the likes of ‘Two Steps From Hell’, for some reason it really helps me knuckle down, but all whilst feeling a bit epic, and heroic. Oh, and football too. But games is the main one, and my love for them dates back to the NES days, playing Super Mario and Duck Hunt with the NES zapper. Ever since then my love for video games has grown and grown.
2. What is your proudest geek moment?
There have been quite a few, but the main one has to be starting up this blog. It’s something we’ve talked about for a while, and then one day we thought “lets just do it.” The hardest part was coming up with a name for it, but I think ours represents us pretty well. It doesn’t get much Geekier than starting a blog about how geeky you are!
3. What is your geek motto/favorite geek quote?
I don’t really think I have a favourite quote… how about “Valar Morghulis”… A bit morbid?
4. Who is your geek role model?
Again, I think its tough to pick a role model.I really admire Indie developers, the people who just decide to go out on there own, I think that’s pretty special. As an example, Dean Hall who created DayZ, he started out just making the MOD for Arma II, and now look at it! Its a standalone game, with thousands of people playing, and it has been in the top 3 of the Steam charts basically since it came out.
The chap who made Banished, Luke, he just decided to start up on his own with Shining Rock Software, and now he has a fantastic game to his name.
People like that are the role models. If you ever want some inspiration to start something geeky, learn from these people.
5. Which SingleHopper geek do you most relate to? Why?
The guy with the cat picture? I like cats too.
6. How familiar are you with SingleHop’s product offerings (dedicated servers, private cloud hosting, managed hosting, etc.)?
Not very, but I have a basic understanding of servers and server hosting etc… But hey, I didn’t know who they were before, but now I do, so I guess the tactic worked. If you want more info about SingleHop, check out their new private cloud hosting page!
7. Anything else you think we should know?
Being a geek or a nerd used to have a bit of a stigma attached to it, people thought if you were a geek, then you were somehow a bit of a loser…. I don’t get it.
I know that, that has kind of died down a little bit now, and it’s a lot more “acceptable” to be a geek, as if it wasn’t before. But for me, if you are a geek, you are just someone who is either really knowledgeable about something or really passionate about something, or both! I don’t see how it can ever be seen as a bad thing. “Oh my god, check this guy out, he knows loads about history, what a loser!”. If someone wants to call me a geek or a nerd I will say “Thank you” because that’s exactly what I am, and I LOVE IT! So should everyone else. Embrace your inner geek, you know you want to!

1. What makes you a geek?
As Will mentioned above it’s got to be for the love of gaming. But it doesn’t stop there. I dabble in anime, comics, Lego, Warhammer, WWE geeky tv / films. Anything remotely Nintendo related though and I have to try and own it, latest example being the McDonalds happy meals that featured Mario toys. Every Wednesday when the fresh toys came out I went on my lunch break to buy a happy meal and the extra 2nd toy, I did this for 4 weeks. Totally worth it. And when I heard that Kinder Eggs were distributing Marvel figures in their eggs, well of course I had to go out of my way to purchase some. As I said if it’s video game, comic, anime or general geeky tv / movie related I love it. Having a nerd room at home backs this claim up.
2. What is your proudest geek moment?
Again I have to agree with Will, but this blog is a very big thing for us. I’m proud we finally decided to do it, all over emails about how we both had thought about it, it just made sense to do it, Think it’s going well so far, here’s hoping we’re eligible for an E3 press pass in 2015.
3. What is your geek motto/favorite geek quote?
“Being a geek is all about being honest about what you enjoy and not being afraid to demonstrate that affection. It means never having to play it cool about how much you like something. It’s basically a license to proudly emote on a somewhat childish level rather than behave like a supposed adult. Being a geek is extremely liberating.” – Simon Pegg
4. Who is your geek role model?
Well the quote above comes from Simon Pegg, he went to our home town Bristol Uni and look at him now. Would like to say i’d follow in his footsteps but I never went to Uni, and don’t think acting is for me, but he’s a self acclaimed Geek, He’s worked in Star Trek, Mission Impossible, made the amazing cornetto trilogy and got to work with some awesome people on Paul. All around seems a nice guy, and he’s a geek!
5. Which SingleHopper geek do you most relate to? Why?
I’m afraid I’m unaware of any of the “SingleHoppers” and I’m not entirely sure of their Geeky-ness in comparison to my own.
6. How familiar are you with SingleHop’s product offerings (dedicated servers, private cloud hosting, managed hosting, etc.)?
Unfortunately not very, I have to admit I had to take a look at their website to see, but they appear to have a rather strong list of customers, so they must be doing something right. Kudos!
7. Anything else you think we should know?
While we both consider ourselves Geek’s it maybe worth mentioning that we’re not obese, greasy and sit in our parents bedrooms all evening reading Pokemon fan fics (which is stereotyping at it’s finest right? ), I’ve just got married this year to the girl I’ve been with for 5 years, and we have 2 completely crazy cats and I’m a fan of sports as-well as Geeky stuff especially Football, Formula 1 and Basketball. Probably the biggest admission is that I’m still rocking a PC that runs on Windows XP as my main source of internet usage, I’m not a big PC gamer anymore, so it’s sufficient enough, but I’ll need to upgrade should our blog & forum reach new heights!
