Okay, first things first. As most of you are probably well aware, last week saw the release of the Destiny Beta for PS3 and PS4, well this week its Xbox’s turn. On Wednesday the Destiny Beta will hit Xbox 360 and Xbox One. With that in mind, we will be giving away two beta keys for the Xbox One version of the game. “So what do I need to do to get my hands on one of these glorious codes?” Well that’s the simple bit, all you have to do to be in with a chance is keep your eyes peeled on our Twitter, as we will be tweeting out the codes when we get them, which will be on the day (23rd), although I’m not sure what time. But don’t worry, we will send some updates throughout the day to let you know when they might drop.
Friday night was a relatively quiet one, I mostly played Titanfall. There has been a new game type added since I last played called ‘Marked for death’. Basically one player from each team gets ‘marked’ and you have to hunt them down and kill them, once you do, or once the other team gets the kill, it then switches to another person. It was a pretty fun game mode, my only problem with it is that it’s too easy to hunt your opponent down, as they are constantly highlighted. If they were only highlighted every 5 or 10 seconds, I think it would make it a bit more interesting.
We also watched Reservoir Dogs as it had been ages since we’d seen it.
On Saturday I got word of a new game, well kind of new game. Heroes & Generals. The game, which is free to play, is a combination of FPS and strategy.
Heroes & Generals is an online war game with multiple game modes accessible from multiple platforms. Play the game as the hero on the battlefield, the officer making the tactical decisions to win the battle, the general command devising the grand strategy and everything in between. Every player’s action has consequences for the war effort.
Mainly the game is a WWII Online FPS, but it all ties in with the strategic side of it to form a persistent game world.
The strategic side of the game, called the campaign allows the ‘General’ to command assault teams on either the US or German side, they can then move them around the games map to conquer cities or strategic locations. When two or more hostile Assault Teams attack each other, a mission is created in the mission list, and players from each side can join and play out that mission. The Assault Teams carries an amount of resources, which will be the ones available in the Action game, and all kills in the Action-game will be reflected in the Campaign. The ‘Generals’ can also add reinforcements to an ongoing battle, so your troops on the battlefield will get more resources.
Sounds pretty cool to me, the problem is, is that it’s in early access at the moment, so has a few issues. The main one being the servers. The whole weekend I wasn’t actually able to get online and play a single game of it. I did manage to play the tutorial type mission which gets you to grips with the game a little, but that was it.
But from what I’ve seen of the game it looks pretty promising, and quite good fun and I’m really looking forward to getting to spend some time on it. It’s been a long while since I’ve played any WWII games, and I do kind of miss the era a bit.
I didn’t just sit around trying to get in to a game all day though, late afternoon we headed over to Cardiff as it was my girlfriends brother’s birthday. A group of us all went out for some drinks and a bit of partying.
On Sunday, feeling a little hung over, and waking up in what can only be described as the hottest room I’ve ever slept in, we made our way home to slob it out for the day.
I flitted between a few games, a bit more Titanfall, some Football Manager, Natural Selection 2. I even tried Heroes & Generals a few times, but to no avail.
– Will
I’m looking forward to Destiny like anyone else is, but I’ve confessed to Will that it’s not the game I’m most anticipating this year to his shock. So with that in mind I didn’t pre-order it therefore didn’t get a beta code. As Thursday dragged on and the hype surrounding the beta got more intense it hit me I really should have pre-ordered for that Beta code.
Well I did some Beta begging on a forum I frequent a lot and fortunately someone was nice enough to pass me a Beta code on the Friday.
So Friday… I didn’t start the Beta straight away as it was too hot, and I had reason to celebrate in it being my last day of work, So I spent the evening in my garden with my wife and a few friends having a few beers around our new fire pit. By 11pm I started to install the Beta and by 1am I was playing it till 3am (also viewing an incredible storm outside)
Saturday was a lazy day, and on lazy days that means gaming, So I again played a heck of a lot of the Beta, and actually went back to Watch Dogs for a while doing a few of the side quests as I’ve finished the game now.
Sunday as it was another glorious day I spent it a local park with friends celebrating their daughters 1st birthday, we played some football and basketball, then in the evening the 2 usual WWE fans came round and we settled in for Battleground (results to arrive later)
So that was my weekend. On a positive note, I’m now off work for 3 weeks which will mostly be spent gaming hopefully.
