It’s been quite some time since we last highlighted a game as ‘one to watch‘. However, when I stumbled upon Mirthwood I wanted to share it as it looks like a very interesting prospect.
What is Mirthwood?
Mirthwood, from Bad Ridge Games, takes inspiration from games like Fable, Rimworld, and Stardew Valley to create one unforgettable experience. Create a character and enjoy life in a spirited town full of rich and changing relationships. Additionally, you can spend your time investing in deep home and farm management. Then venture out of the towns to embark upon a dark fantasy adventure.
Experience changing seasons, vibrant wildlife with a living ecosystem that helps to drive emergent story generation in a medieval fantasy setting. Mirthwood will be coming to both Nintendo Switch and Steam and will be running a crowdfunding campaign via Indiegogo in the near future.
Living in Brightoak
Brightoak will be your home town and is a town full of life. Visit the taverns, blacksmiths, and orchards. Get to know the town’s folk and create relationships with them. Along your journey, you will encounter many different people some of which who will pass on impacting the life of the town and world you live in.
The world of Mirthwood consists of six regions. Each with their own unique feel, secrets to discover and quests to embark upon.
Brightoak is surrounded by dense forest full of life. Whilst off the the east is the beautiful coastal town of Greyshore. Exploring and getting to know the lands is all part of the open ended adventure awaiting you.
Your Homestead
A large part of Mirthwood is creating a house you can call home. When first arriving in Brightoak it might not look like much. But over time you will be able to upgrade as much or as little as you like. Additionally, you can tend to the lands around you, growing all sorts of crops. You can also look after chickens and cows or make ale if you fancy yourself a booze connoisseur. Take what you grow and rear to market in order to make your living.
However, not all is as peaceful and cheery as it first may seem.
Your Adventure
Should you decide to venture south you will encounter the region known as Bleakwood. An area that’s full of mystery and shrouded in fog. If you’re feeling brave enough you could encounter the Hag of Bleakwood and other dark and dangerous creatures. Some quests you embark upon may take you down dark paths where you will be challenged in combat. Townsfolk could go missing and it might be up to you to find them.
The non-linear nature of the game can take you in many different directions. Create your character how you want and shape your legacy in Mirthwood however you see fit. With light RPG mechanics, you’ll be able to upgrade your character over the course of the game. Specialising in areas that interest you most. What you leave behind as your legacy can then be picked up by your children to continue the journey.
Mirthwood looks like a really interesting game that, should it successfully combine the different elements and influences, could be excellent fun.
